Limestone and Stone Cleaning

The Stone on Austin Homes

Limestone is everywhere in Austin, from Hyde Park porches to Westlake hillside homes and Hill Country ranch houses. Knowing which stone you have matters, because each one reacts differently to water, pressure, and cleaners.

Austin Limestone and Cordova Cream

The most common stone in the area is Austin limestone, a soft, somewhat porous stone quarried near Austin in white, yellow, and reddish brown shades, according to Rock & Vine magazine. Cordova Cream is a local variety with a smooth, cream color that is popular on newer homes. Because these stones are soft and absorb water, they stain easily and need the gentlest cleaning.

Cordova Shell Stone

Cordova shell stone, also called Whitestone lentil, is found only in and around Austin, and its surface often shows fossil shells from an ancient sea, as D Magazine describes. Those shells and pockets trap dirt and algae. High pressure can knock loose the shell pieces that give this stone its character, so we clean it at very low pressure.

Lueders Limestone

Lueders limestone is a denser stone in shades from charcoal gray to caramel brown, quarried north of Abilene. It handles cleaning better than softer Austin limestone, but it still reacts to acid and can etch. We still start with a test spot.

Flagstone, Sandstone, and Manufactured Stone

Many Austin homes also use flagstone, sandstone, and manufactured stone veneer, which is common on newer builds in Leander, Round Rock, and Pflugerville. Manufactured stone is made from colored concrete, and high pressure can wear off its surface color. We clean it gently and test first.

Stone Type How It Behaves Our Method
Austin limestone Soft and porous Very low pressure, stone safe cleaner
Cordova Cream Soft, light color shows stains Low pressure, test spot first
Cordova shell stone Fossil pockets trap dirt Very low pressure, careful rinse
Lueders limestone Denser, still reacts to acid Low pressure, stone safe cleaner
Manufactured stone Surface color can wear off Gentle soft wash, test spot first

Why Limestone Gets So Dirty

Limestone soaks up water like a sponge, and whatever is in that water soaks in with it. Algae and lichen grow in the pores, especially on shaded and north facing walls. The Indiana Limestone Institute notes that algae on limestone often looks like plain dirt at arm's length, but up close it shows tiny red, green, and orange spots. Austin stone also collects black streaks under windows and gutters, rust from sprinklers, white water spots, and gray film from construction dust.

What Damages Limestone

Acid Cleaners

Limestone is mostly calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid. Acid based brick cleaners and many store bought "stone" or "patio" cleaners etch limestone and leave dull, rough spots that cannot be washed away. Stone suppliers like Vetter Stone say plainly not to use acid on stone. We never do.

High Pressure

High pressure water cuts into soft stone, rounds off edges, and blows out mortar. The Indiana Limestone Institute warns that even pressure washing can damage stone, because pressure, nozzle size, and distance are all in the operator's hands. We use low pressure, wide fan tips, and a safe distance on every stone surface.

Scrubbing and Wire Brushes

Wire brushes and hard scrubbing scratch limestone and leave metal particles that can rust later. If a spot needs agitation, we use soft, non metal brushes. Most of the work is done by the cleaner and time, not by force.

How We Clean Limestone and Stone

We start with a small test spot in a hidden area to see how your stone reacts. Then we wet the stone with clean water so it does not soak up the cleaner. We apply a stone safe cleaner at low pressure, give it time to work on the algae and grime, and rinse gently from the top down. Afterward, we check the mortar joints and point out any loose or missing mortar before it becomes a bigger problem.

What Results to Expect

The Indiana Limestone Institute says dirt on limestone is not harmful and that removing every trace usually removes original stone surface too. It suggests a target of about 80 to 90 percent clean for safe methods. We follow the same idea: your stone will look much brighter and cleaner, but we will not strip it to get the last 10 percent. Deep old stains, especially rust and oil, may lighten instead of disappearing, and we tell you that before we start.

Stone Surfaces We Clean

We clean limestone and stone walls on homes, chimneys, porch columns, front steps, and window sills. We also clean retaining walls, flower bed borders, mailboxes, outdoor fireplaces, and HOA entry monuments. Stone pool coping and flagstone patios are covered on our patio and pool deck page. Stone is often cleaned on the same visit as a house wash.

How Much Does Limestone Cleaning Cost in Austin?

Area Typical Price
Stone porch, columns, or accent wall $149 to $299
Stone added to a house wash $100 to $300 extra
Full stone or limestone home $599 to $1,299
Retaining walls and landscape stone Quoted after a walkthrough

Stone costs more to clean than siding because it takes more time, a stronger cleaning mix, and more careful rinsing. Your price depends on how much stone you have, its height, the type of stone, and how much algae and staining has built up. You always get a written quote before any work begins.

Should You Seal Limestone?

Sealing can help limestone resist stains, but the wrong product can cause more harm than good. Vetter Stone advises against coatings that stop water vapor from passing through the face of the stone, because trapped moisture can damage it from inside. If you want to seal, choose a breathable, penetrating sealer made for limestone and test it first. [If Robert offers stone sealing, add the service and price here. If not, keep this section as advice only.]

Recent Limestone Cleaning Projects in Austin

Crestview: Limestone front porch and columns cleaned with a house wash on the same visit. Black algae streaks and cedar pollen film removed with low pressure and a stone safe cleaner. The stone took about one hour of the four hour visit.

Westlake: Lueders limestone home with algae on the north and east walls and rust spots from sprinklers along the base. Cleaned in about six hours after a test spot. The algae came off fully, and the rust lightened a lot.
